Ubisoft strikes again! Star Wars Outlaws will be the franchise’s first venture into open-world single-player gaming.

On June 11th, Ubisoft unveiled the first trailers for Star Wars Outlaws. This new Ubisoft production represents a significant milestone for the Star Wars franchise, offering a platform to showcase its immense potential even further.

Ubisoft carries a considerable responsibility with this project. Star Wars is a vast and cherished universe with a discerning and passionate community. Given past disappointments such as the Disney sequel trilogy, the cancellation of projects like Star Wars Underworld, and the shelving of significant titles like Star Wars 1313 and EA’s Mandalorian-themed project, Ubisoft must navigate carefully.

However, this production holds the promise of potentially securing Ubisoft’s future. If it can effectively harness the rich possibilities of George Lucas’s universe, it stands a chance of not only satisfying fans but also revitalizing the gaming experience for Star Wars enthusiasts.

The Narrative Premises

The plot of Star Wars Outlaws will follow the new protagonist Kay Vess, who seeks a way out of the dangerous and intricate world of crime thanks to an opportunity presented by Gaylen, an enigmatic and unseen figure. This journey will unfold with unexpected twists and turns.

In this chapter, Kay Vess will work as a mercenary for many dubious and dangerous characters. The trailers and cover art feature the Hutts prominently, suggesting interactions with Jabba The Hutt. Another crucial aspect of the game involves the syndicates, particularly the Pyke Syndicate, a powerful faction showcased in the first trailer and on the cover.

Within the game, players will also engage with bounty hunters, who were highly active during the original trilogy era. It’s highly likely to encounter Boba Fett and other Mandalorians who were either oppressed by the Empire or employed as mercenaries. Additionally, characters like Darth Maul, hinted at in the finale of Solo: A Star Wars Story and the Rebels animated series, may make appearances.

It’s unclear whether Jedi or Sith will be encountered throughout the game, leaving room for speculation and anticipation.

The possibilities within the game seem boundless.

The Combat System

Star Wars Outlaws features a combat system centered around the use of Blasters. The primary weapon will be a lightweight Blaster pistol, which can certainly be upgraded and replaced throughout the game.

Players can utilize more powerful weapons such as heavy Blasters or engage in combat situations stealthily, leveraging Kay Vess’s remarkable agility and the assistance of her loyal companion, Nix. The combat system proves to be remarkable and superior to many previous Star Wars action titles.

Combat can also take place on vehicles, particularly with speeders, allowing for maneuvers to swiftly eliminate pursuers. Players can manage combat with their own spacecraft; the targeting system is classic and easily manageable, ensuring dynamic and unpredictable encounters with enemy ships, true to the style of Star Wars.

Open World Management

Star Wars Outlaws will offer players many planets to explore with vast maps, diverse cities, and different biomes each with its own fauna, which can be extremely dangerous depending on the area.

The new open-world system is directly influenced by the player’s actions. Depending on their choices and their relationship with various factions and syndicates, players may have more or less access to different areas. Reputation management is essential in the world of Outlaws and will be a central element of the experience.

Exploring planets can be done on foot or with Kay’s Speeder. In space, players can only explore the area outside the atmosphere; free flight over the planet is not permitted. To travel from one planet to another, players must use hyperspace jumps. These decisions, made for technical design and optimization reasons, are quite understandable considering the amount of work required to implement such features.

The New Information From the New Trailer

On April 9th, Ubisoft released the new trailer for the story of Star Wars Outlaws. This trailer brought many exciting new details about the main threat and the new characters that Kay will encounter during her journey.

The main threat will be Sliro, the leader of a new, extremely powerful and influential criminal syndicate, the Zerek Besh. After escaping for failing a job for Sliro, Kay will have a bounty on her head and will be pursued by a lethal bounty hunter, Vail, a very interesting character who will hold many surprises.

Kay’s goal will be to rob Sliro and be free, leading her on a journey across the galaxy to find new allies and support for the difficult heist. These premises highlight the incredible resemblance to the character of Ian Solo, who can be found encased in carbonite in Jabba The Hutt‘s palace.

During the trailer, two important factions can be observed, one of which was specifically created for the game through collaboration between Ubisoft and LucasFilmGames, the Ashiga Clan, whose role is still unknown. Another returning faction after many years is the Crimson Dawn, who, after their appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story, will bring many surprises and perhaps the possibility of encountering Kyra or even Darth Maul directly.

Star Wars Outlaws’ Release Date.

It’s clear that Ubisoft is placing a lot of emphasis on this title, and expectations are sky-high. It’s a “risky” project, but at the same time, it could potentially save both Ubisoft and the Star Wars franchise in the gaming industry.

During the Story trailer, the release date was announced, set for August 30th.
