Yes, it’s true, and now it’s official! Astro, the most lovable and iconic robot in the entire PlayStation universe, is returning for his most spectacular adventure yet.
During the PlayStation State of Play event on May 31, 2024, Team Asobi unveiled the newest and largest installment in the Astro Bot series, set to release exclusively on PlayStation 5 on September 6, 2024.
Nicolas Doucet, Studio Director at Team Asobi, shared his excitement and joy about the announcement of the new project: “Since making an appearance at the launch of PlayStation 5, Astro has introduced many players to the magic of PlayStation. We received a ton of heart-warming comments about how much fun the game was, how it utilized the DualSense wireless controller in fun ways, and how it paid tribute to 25 years of PlayStation history. From the bottom of our robotic hearts, thank you very much for all your support! We listened to your comments and now, Astro is back in a super-sized space adventure, his biggest to date.”
As previously mentioned, the game promises to deliver the most thrilling adventure yet for our beloved hero, guiding you through 6 galaxies and over 80 levels in search of Astro’s scattered crew. But how do you travel from planet to planet? Well, with your new spacecraft, the Dual Speeder—a magnificent high-tech spaceship reminiscent of the sleek design of the DualSense controller. With this sleek vessel, you’ll soar through the cosmos at the speed of light and touch down in a variety of breathtaking locations, from lush forests and sandy beaches to scorching volcanoes and even more surprising destinations like a gigantic hourglass or the canopy of a singing tree.
And hold on, there’s much more in store. Throughout this epic journey, Astro will unlock a brand-new set of extraordinary and distinctive abilities—15 in total—each offering its own distinctive play style. Just like in Astro’s Playroom, these abilities will fully take advantage of the features of the DualSense controller, including haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Among Astro’s many new skills, you’ll master the Twin-Frog Gloves, granting you long-range punching and swinging capabilities, and the Giant Sponge, enabling you to water from the environment to grow huge and cause massive (and slightly moist) destruction.
Additionally, you’ll have a charming companion by your side, Barkster, the Bulldog Booster, a loyal robotic dog that empowers you to air-dash and smash through enemies, metal, and glass. In summary, the Asobi team has unquestionably raised the bar with this new installment.
Another thing that certainly won’t be lacking are the numerous easter eggs that developers have always treated us to—small secrets for players to discover scattered throughout the game world, which will bring Astro together with beloved characters and familiar faces that have become icons of the PlayStation universe. Among them are the agile Nathan Drake, the courageous Aloy, and the now legendary Norse heroes Kratos and Atreus.
