Fumi Games surprises us once again with a title change and plenty of other irresistibly captivating updates.
After several months, Fumi Games unveiled a new trailer for Mouse during the recent Xbox event. This latest presentation showcased several significant changes and improvements to the entire project, which we previously discussed here.
The first big change is the new title: MOUSE: P.I. For Hire, a name that perfectly aligns with the game’s storyline. Beyond this, Fumi Games has significantly enhanced many other aspects of the experience. Let’s take a look.
Art and Style
MOUSE: P.I. For Hire adopts the Rubber Hose animation style, a type of animation used in classic 1920s cartoons like Betty Boop and Steamboat Willie. The bold use of black ink on white backgrounds, exaggerated facial expressions, “button eyes,” and white gloves are all typical features of this style. Adding to these are the rubbery, “hose-like” limbs that give the technique its name. Another admirable example of this technique is Cuphead, which we have recently covered.
While the level of detail was still being polished in previous trailers, it has now reached a much higher quality. This is especially evident in the environments, weapons, and characters, all enhanced by this unique style.
A particularly noteworthy aspect is the game’s faithful homage to the cinematic marketing of the 1930s, the era in which MOUSE is set. The introduction, with its vintage writing style and emphasis on the artwork’s beauty, perfectly captures the essence of that time. The sequence showcasing the various characters is highly nostalgic and well-designed. Every element of the new trailer highlights the team’s extensive work and research to deliver a unique experience.
Environmental and Investigative Interaction
As a skilled private detective, Mouse can interact with his surroundings in various ways, whether to gain an advantage in combat, explore, or carry out investigations. He can shoot at different environmental elements, like chandeliers and barrels, to drop them onto enemies or blow up objects to handle more complex situations.
During exploration, Mouse can use his tail to reach a hook and swing across to the other side of a pier, or use his ears as helicopter blades to glide. In tougher situations, Mouse can find food and alcoholic drinks to regain health or armor. The food is another carefully crafted detail, with each dish inspired by vintage cartoons.
Investigative scenarios involve using a camera: players can follow clues and analyze them on a board, similar to the “mind palace” mechanic in Alan Wake 2. This feature could be truly engaging, with endless possibilities given the original cast of characters in the game.
Narrative Component
A key element of Mouse P.I. for Hire is its storytelling. As a noir and investigative title, attention to writing and world-building is crucial. The team has done a tremendous job here: Mouse embodies the classic film noir private detective stereotype—intelligent, lethal, and quick-witted.
In the new trailer, we briefly saw a dialogue screen with a character, but it lasted only a few seconds, so it’s unclear whether there will be dialogue options or a more linear narrative.
All things considered, Mouse P.I. for Hire is shaping up to be a highly intriguing title.
Combat and Boss Fights
Since its first trailer several years ago, MOUSE has impressed with its attention to combat mechanics. The combat system and shooting mechanics of Mouse are unique and have a distinct personality, a crucial factor to stand out in today’s rather monotonous market.
The shooting mechanics have been further refined; the weapons are now even more responsive, providing solid feedback with each shot. Every hit on the enemies comes with an animated effect matching the weapon used. Depending on the inflicted wounds, enemy deaths draw inspiration from vintage cartoon gags: violent yet always ironic and lighthearted.
The trailer showcased an intense boss fight, with the combat and arena designed excellently to allow for good mobility. Thanks to Mouse’s agility, players can make use of cover, resources, and various angles for attacking to gain an advantage.
The team’s effort has truly impressed us, making us believe that Mouse P.I. for Hire could become a standout FPS.
When Will Mouse’s Office Open?

Initially planned only for PC, the game will now also launch on all major consoles. This is another exciting development that will give an original title like MOUSE: P.I. For Hire the chance to achieve the success it deserves.
Good luck, Detective Mouse!
