Every breath is a torment. Every death, the start of endless suffering. Welcome to the abyss that feeds on your soul. Welcome to HUNGER.

HUNGER

It’s been eight months since that scorching summer day of August 8, 2024, when GOOD FUN CORPORATION — the UK-based team founded by veterans of Black Matter, creators of Hell Let Loose — gave us our first haunting glimpse of HUNGER through a cryptic teaser. On April 25, 2025, they returned, pulling back the curtain even further, unveiling a deeper, far more harrowing gameplay reveal that lays bare the nightmarish vision and core gameplay design philosophy behind this dark, twisted new IP.

Let’s not waste any more time — steel your nerves, follow us, and dive into the abyss as we break down the trailer and uncover the nightmare that is HUNGER.

Into the Maw of HUNGER: Key Details, Core Features, and the Nightmarish Vision behind GOOD FUN CORPORATION’s Extraction RPG

As outlined in the introduction — and as detailed by the developers on the game’s official Steam page HUNGER is a PvPvE first-person extraction shooter and slasher, centered around a deep and intricate RPG system where players forge their own personal stories within the unforgiving loop of multiplayer survival.

While certain elements — clearly reflected in the promotional material released by the development team — may call to mind acclaimed titles like Hunt: Showdown and Witchfire, with which it shares notable stylistic and gameplay parallels, HUNGER unmistakably carves out a unique identity of its own. A uniqueness that is further enriched by the game’s compelling setting: a dark fantasy reimagining of the Napoleonic Wars.

It is a world on the verge of collapse — scarred by endless conflict, ravaged by a creeping plague, and torn apart by horrors both human and unnatural. Yet amid the ruins, a deeper evil festers. A mysterious bacterium of unknown origin has corrupted the land, sowing fear, despair, and awakening an ancient malevolence, ready to engulf humanity in its monstrous embrace.

In HUNGER, players will scavenge dying lands, face monstrous terrors, and fight for survival against other desperate souls in harrowing, high-risk expeditions — where each step forward could be their last.

As outlined earlier in this section, RPG elements and the extraction loop are the pillars of the gameplay experience. Your primary goal, beyond simply surviving and evading death during the various expeditions you will embark on, is to master the hostile world, learning its dangers and growing stronger through experience. This is achieved by engaging with a complex, multi-layered progression system that evolves in response to the player’s decisions — unlocking a rich skill tree through quests, expeditions, and survival against overwhelming odds.

Another essential component of the game is the extraction loop, which, as the developers emphasize, is not merely a simple gameplay mechanic but the primary means through which players enhance their strength, build their reputation, and acquire advanced weapons, rare gear, and other essential resources.

Furthermore, players will have the opportunity to choose a unique crafting or gathering profession, allowing them to craft valuable items — either for personal use, to support their companions, or to trade within the vibrant, player-driven economy.

However, these are just a few of the ways in which players can personalize and enrich their experience. Although specific details have yet to be fully revealed, the developers have confirmed that the game will offer extensive customization options, allowing players to alter their appearance with cosmetics found as loot, engage in player-to-player trading within the marketplace, and interact, quest, and trade with others at the social hub known as the Chateau.

An additional, particularly significant feature — one that could distinctly set HUNGER apart from conventional extraction shooters — is the absence of wipe mechanics. In HUNGER, progress is permanent, ensuring that every victory, every scar, and every achievement stays with you, leaving behind an evolving, lasting legacy instead of one that’s reset with each cycle.

Merchants, Mercenaries, and Monsters: The Ruthless Art of Survival in HUNGER

While the gameplay footage showcased in the trailer is from a pre-alpha build—meaning it is not representative of the final product, which remains subject to significant changes—the gameplay reveal of HUNGER provides an intriguing glimpse into the ambitious direction that GOOD FUN CORPORATION aims to take with their new project.

The two-minute trailer hurls players into a world stripped of hope, where desolation and death reign supreme. It not only reveals the brutal, suffocating environments players must navigate, but also introduces the horrific creatures birthed by the Bacterium—twisted abominations that have risen from the bodies of the fallen, driven by an insatiable, ravenous hunger.

While it’s still too early to fully evaluate the diversity of the game’s bestiary or the strategies players will need to employ in order to counter these threats, the designs and the varied, unpredictable behaviors of the creatures showcased in the trailer thus far are promising and certainly leave room for optimism.

However, as the trailer makes clear, these monstrous beings are not the only threat awaiting us. The horrors of war and the unchecked spread of the Bacterium have ravaged not only the bodies of fallen soldiers but also the minds of the few survivors left. Driven to madness by violence and despair, these survivors will show no mercy, attacking on sight in their desperate bid to claim the few remaining resources.

HUNGER

Combat takes center stage in the gameplay reveal, with a brutal sequence highlighting a savage encounter with an infected foe. The trailer also showcases a broad range of both ranged and melee weapons, each providing players with the tools necessary to unleash their fury. While the footage doesn’t allow a full evaluation of the combat arsenal, it hints at a potentially expansive and versatile array of weaponry designed to suit a variety of combative playstyles.

Equally impressive is the game’s world-building, particularly the captivating urban architecture and the explorers’ distinctive uniforms. These design elements hint at a deep connection to historical influences, potentially drawing from events like the Napoleonic Wars to shape the game’s environments, weaponry, and overall artistic direction.

The trailer also provides a first look at the trading systems at the heart of the game’s central hub, emphasizing the importance of forging strong relationships with merchants dealing in weapons, medical supplies, and other essential resources — alongside a brief glance at the inventory system.

As the developers suggest, mere combat prowess will not be enough. Only through mastering both the arts of warfare and trade — two sides of the same brutal coin — can players hope to survive and avoid becoming prey in the merciless world of HUNGER.

Information, Key Details, and Early Access Roadmap for HUNGER

HUNGER will launch in early access on PC via Steam in 2025, with the full 1.0 release planned for two years later, when the game will also be available on additional platforms.

GOOD FUN CORPORATION has provided an in-depth preview of the early access content on the game’s Steam page. The initial build will be extremely feature-rich, featuring three expansive maps, with many more planned for future updates. Players can look forward to more than thirty weapons, a variety of gadgets, medical supplies, and tools, along with an extensive character and weapon customization system, most of which can be earned through in-game progression.

The multiplayer hub, known as the Chateau, will serve as a central meeting point where players can interact with each other, NPCs, and quest givers, explore professions, and dive into a wide range of activities. The developers promise excellent build variety, numerous viable playstyles, deep questlines, and a wealth of endgame content, including dungeons and boss encounters. Features like proximity-based VOIP during Expeditions, gathering and crafting professions, and a player-driven marketplace will further enhance the experience.

Future updates during early access will further enrich the experience, bringing a host of new content, including additional weapons, new Expedition areas, expanded sections of the Chateau, and new enemies to face — including more than eight additional types of Hunger.
