Winter is Coming to Ratdom!
Publisher United Label and developer Odd Bug Studio have unveiled the brand-new “Magic & Monsters” trailer for Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter, set to launch on January 28th. Taking place years after the events of its predecessor, the sequel transports players to the unforgiving northern frontiers, where Arlo, the new protagonist and heir to the Warden of the Wastes, embarks on a blood-soaked quest for vengeance against an ancient and deadly threat to Ratdom.
Narrated once again by the legendary Doug Cockle in his iconic, unique style, the trailer offers a captivating glimpse into the frosty, unforgiving landscapes of the North. It also introduces a powerful new spellcasting system, empowering Arlo to wield the ancient magic of the Elementa.
These are the words of Jack Bennett, Lead Designer and Co-Founder of Odd Bug Studio (whom we recently had the pleasure of interviewing in an exclusive, in-depth feature on the sequel): “We’ve been eagerly awaiting the moment to share that spellcasting is coming to the Ratdom in Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter. Fans of the original game are familiar with the brutal combat of sword and spear against fierce adversaries, so for the sequel, we wanted to introduce an additional layer of real-time combat options for players to wield against Arlo’s enemies. The ‘Elementa’ magics of the gods, along with the inclusion of traps, provide players with an extra strategic layer to consider, and more.”
For the first time in the Tails of Iron series, players will gain access to a dark and forbidden power—an ancient force, shrouded in secrecy and preserved through the ages. By uncovering the arcane knowledge of the ancient rat gods, Arlo will harness the elemental forces, a technique of immense power that stands as the final hope and last bulwark capable of turning the tide of war.
Ice, Fire, Poison, and Electricity—these are the four Elementa, primal forces of immeasurable strength that Arlo can master and wield against his enemies, each imbued with unique attributes and cataclysmic effects:
- Poison infiltrates enemy ranks, dealing sustained damage over time.
- Fire unleashes searing bursts of flame, incinerating foes in an instant.
- Ice freezes enemies solid, immobilizing them in a frosty grip.
- Electricity summons crackling lightning bolts to smite and stun opponents.
Additionally, scattered across the world are sacred shrines devoted to these elemental forces. By interacting with these hallowed sites, players can deepen Arlo’s connection to the elements, unlocking upgraded versions of his abilities to unleash even greater devastation upon his enemies.
If fully executed by Odd Bug Studio, this addition could provide the vital edge needed to elevate Tails of Iron 2’s combat system, imbuing the sequel with a crucial layer of depth that enables it to stand apart—and potentially even surpass its predecessor. For now, all that remains is to await the game’s release and see whether this ambitious decision lives up to the lofty expectations of its fanbase.
Set to launch on January 28, Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in both Standard and Deluxe digital editions. In addition to the base game, those buying the Deluxe version will receive two DLC packs (which will also be available to purchase separately): The “Augur of the Draugr” set that includes the legendary Draugr armor of old, and the “Hair to the Throne” cosmetic pack, which features an exclusive collection of beards and hairstyles to strike fear into Arlo’s adversaries. The PC Deluxe version also includes the game’s digital artbook and official soundtrack.
