Know your gear
Crysis offers a wide range of weapons and equipment, and mastering their use is crucial for survival. Your loadout is divided into four categories:
- Short-range support weapons
- Two standard medium-to-long-range weapons
- Heavy weapons
- Various explosives
1 – Short-Range Weapons:
- Pistol: The pistol is your primary close-combat weapon in Crysis. It’s great for enclosed spaces and for situations when you run out of ammo for standard weapons. You can dual-wield pistols and equip them with accessories like a suppressor, laser sight, and flashlight. The pistol offers two firing modes: semi-automatic and burst fire, allowing you to balance precision and power.
- Enhanced Punches: Close combat can be used in two ways: Use punches—activated through strength mode—to knock out or eliminate enemies and smash walls or other obstacles on the map. Lift heavy objects, explosive barrels, or enemies to throw them and create chaos during combat.
2 – Standard Weapons:
Crysis provides a variety of weapons for medium- and long-range combat. Each weapon in this category is customizable in real-time, a crucial feature for adapting to different enemies and scenarios. Equipping the right sight can make a big difference.
Here are the weapons you’ll encounter during missions:
- SCAR: The game’s standard assault rifle and the U.S. Army’s primary weapon. It’s versatile, fast, and accurate, especially when combined with strength mode and an assault scope. It deals significant damage to all types of enemies. Ammo is scarce, so use it sparingly. You can attach a suppressor, flashlight, laser sight, red-dot sight, assault scope, sniper scope, tactical launcher, and grenade launcher.
- FY71: The KPA (Korean People’s Army) standard assault rifle, fully automatic and capable of using standard or incendiary rounds. It sacrifices stability for speed, so equip a red-dot sight or assault scope for the best results. This is the most common weapon on the island, with abundant ammo, unlike the SCAR. It supports the same attachments as the SCAR, plus incendiary rounds.
- XM 2014: A military shotgun perfect for close-range combat in the jungle and urban areas. It delivers excellent power at both close and medium distances. It has two firing modes: a tight spread for medium range and a wider spread for close combat. With a laser sight and assault scope, it’s ideal for breaking through barricades and taking down tough enemies. Attachments include a laser sight, flashlight, red-dot sight, assault scope, and sniper scope.
- DSG-1: Crysis’ standard sniper rifle. This stable and precise weapon is essential for scouting and planning assaults on enemy camps. It supports several sights: laser, iron, sniper, assault, and flashlight.
- GAUSS: A lethal railgun that fires high-velocity projectiles. It’s incredibly useful in the second half of the game. This complex weapon requires calm and precision, with a cooldown between shots. Use a laser sight, an assault scope, and strength mode for maximum accuracy. It supports DSG-1 attachments.
- MPX8: A compact and efficient submachine gun, ideal for tight spaces. It’s fast but not very accurate. Difficult to find, with limited ammo, so use it sparingly. It becomes useful only in the game’s middle section. All sights and the flashlight can be mounted on it. A laser pointer and red-dot sight are recommended.
3 – Heavy weapons:
These weapons are designed to destroy vehicles/exosuits or tackle extremely dangerous situations. Crysis includes four heavy weapons:
- LAW: A guided land/air missile launcher. It comes with three preloaded missiles, perfect for taking down helicopters or enemy boats. IMPORTANT: Once the ammo is depleted, the weapon is discarded. Look for a replacement.
- Molecular Accelerator: A weapon stolen from the Ceph, compatible with the nanosuit. This energy cannon, with unlimited ammo, is very effective against Ceph exosuits. Used in strength mode with short bursts, it performs best. It’s powerful and reliable but appears rarely in the game.
- Hurricane Minigun: A heavy machine gun highly effective against nanosuit enemies, armored soldiers, and heavy exosuits. Its power makes it unstable, so strength mode helps maintain control. The minigun is the most powerful weapon in the game.
- TAC Cannon: A prototype weapon developed by the U.S. Army. This experimental weapon launches tactical nuclear warheads once locked onto a target. It’s only usable during the final battle.
4 – Explosives:
Crysis lets you carry various explosives, useful for quickly destroying tough targets like tanks or anti-aircraft emplacements.
- Grenades: Standard-issue grenades, great for clearing roadblocks or creating chaos in enemy-filled zones. These are Crysis’ basic explosive, with plenty of supply, but use them wisely for maximum effect.
- EMP Grenades: Effective only against nanosuit enemies. The EMP effect disables the defensive systems of enemy suits, allowing for quick eliminations. Use them carefully, as the effect also slows your nanosuit’s health and energy regeneration for several seconds.
- C4 Charges: Powerful explosives perfect for destroying anti-aircraft emplacements or tanks. Rare, so use sparingly.
- Flashbang Grenades: Highly effective indoors for temporarily blinding enemies. Hard to find.
- Smoke Grenades: These create a smoke screen to hide or disorient enemies. Useful in crowded enemy zones like camps, but scarce in supply.
Know the vehicles of Crysis
Crysis offers a variety of drivable vehicles. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each is crucial for making the most of them. These vehicles are divided into ground, water, and air categories.
- Ground Vehicles: Ground vehicles are among the most common in Crysis. They are fast and ideal for quick assaults or support actions.
- HMLTV-998 Bulldog: The primary ground vehicle, a Humvee equipped with a mounted machine gun. It can carry up to four passengers. Widely used by both the KPA and U.S. forces, it’s extremely fast and effective for rapid attacks but not very resistant to explosives or sustained fire. To neutralize it:
- Aim for a tire to send it off-road.
- Hit the fuel tank at the rear to cause an explosion
- Transport Truck: Used by the KPA to transport troops and supplies. This vehicle is highly durable but slow to maneuver. It’s useful for breaking through outpost defenses and facing numerous enemies. To stop it: Set it on fire by targeting the side fuel tank. Throw a grenade to destroy it quickly.
- Tank: Available in just one mission, this armored vehicle delivers great firepower, along with excellent maneuverability and speed. To deal with it, you have three options:
- Use C4 (one charge is enough).
- Fire a missile launcher (three hits are required).
- First target the turret, then the rear to ignite the fuel and cause an explosion.
Water Vehicles: Water vehicles allow for fast travel across oceans and rivers. Used by the KPA to patrol coastal and swampy areas, they are fast but not very durable.
- Patrol Boat: A fast boat with a mounted support turret. Used by the KPA to patrol coasts and rivers. It can be neutralized in three ways:
- Take out the turret operator to render it harmless.
- Use a mounted machine gun to destroy it.
- Fire a guided missile for a quick takedown.
- Civilian Boat: Frequently used by the island’s civilians, it is commonly found in urban areas. While it’s fast and ideal for quick travel, it is fragile and lacks durability. It is available only in the “Onslaught” chapter.
Air Vehicles: Air vehicles are available in just one mission. They are reliable and powerful, providing support fire and making them ideal for troop and vehicle transport.
- VTOL: The U.S. Army’s standard aerial vehicle. It’s very fast and powerful in combat but vulnerable to S.A.M. missiles and heavy artillery. Equipped with missile launchers and an automatic machine gun.
Note: Throughout the game, you will encounter various unusable vehicles, some of which are available in the standalone multiplayer mode Crysis Wars.
Adapt to Combat with the Nanosuit
The Nanosuit is the central feature of the entire Crysis series. Mastering its functionalities is essential for survival. It offers five core abilities that quickly modify both the suit’s structure and the player’s equipment.
Nanosuit Modes:
- Cloak Mode: Allows temporary invisibility, perfect for stealth movement over a few seconds. Ideal for stealth approaches, but it drains energy rapidly, especially when firing or running.
- Strength Mode: Enhances physical strength, enabling jumps up to two meters and improved weapon stability by eliminating recoil or turret sway. Additionally, punches deal amplified damage, useful against enemies and structures.
- Armor Mode: Perfect for direct combat. Reduces incoming damage and improves resistance to explosions or sustained fire (e.g., from turrets). It does not consume energy, as all power is dedicated to reinforcing the armor.
- Speed Mode: Increases movement speed and allows short bursts to escape dangerous situations. However, sprints quickly deplete energy. Recommended for traversing critical areas swiftly.
- Customization Mode: Enables real-time customization of every part of equipped weapons, tailoring them to immediate needs.
Know your Enemy
Facing enemies in Crysis requires strategy. Knowing their weaknesses and how to tackle them is essential.
Human enemies:
- KPA (Korean People’s Army): The primary enemy faction, led by Ri Chan Kyong, the game’s main antagonist. KPA soldiers patrol the island in large groups. Typically, they wear standard uniforms, which make them easy to defeat. However, in more critical and strategically significant areas, they wear reinforced armor or prototype nanosuits.
- KPA Soldier (Light): These soldiers are lightly armored and easy to eliminate. Any weapon is effective, but a headshot is the quickest method. Alternatively, shooting their legs will make them fall, allowing you to finish them off as they try to get up.
- KPA Soldier (Armored): Highly dangerous due to their armor and use of powerful weapons like shotguns. Their armor is tough to penetrate. Best methods to eliminate them include:
- A headshot with a shotgun using buckshot.
- Shooting their legs first, then their arms to heavily damage them.
- KPA Soldier (Nanosuit): These enemies are extremely adaptive, often equipped with precision rifles, silenced SMGs with laser sights, and Hurricane miniguns. Effective tactics:
- Use Cloak Mode to surprise them.
- Switch to Strength Mode and land two headshots with a shotgun.
- Other methods result in wasted ammunition.
- KPA Assault Helicopter: Outposts may be supported by helicopters, resistant to standard bullets and turret fire. To take them down:
- Use a missile launcher, aiming for the rotors or tail (2-3 missiles required).
- During the mission “Onslaught” with the tank, use the main cannon or heavy machine gun.
- When they land, throw two grenades (one inside and one outside) to destroy both the vehicle and its reinforcements.
Alien enemies:
- Ceph Soldiers: Light units that are fast and dangerous, attacking in groups with tentacles and MOAC cannons. They are weak against certain weapons.
Tactics: Equip a Gauss rifle, shotgun, or SCAR with a laser sight and red-dot scope. Fire one shot with the Gauss or a precise burst with the SCAR, avoiding ammo wastage. Maintaining control of the battlefield is critical, as they can kill you with just two hits.
- Ceph Scout: Ceph exoskeleton used for exploration and supporting Ceph soldiers in battles. This unit can deploy a group of Ceph soldiers and use an upgraded MOAC. It’s highly durable but can be taken down quickly with the right weapons.
Tactics:
- Attack from cover at a distance.
- SCAR with laser pointer and red-dot sight, using Strength Mode.
- Modified Gauss with laser pointer and assault scope, using Strength Mode for absolute precision (two shots suffice).
- Heavy fire from anti-aircraft emplacements or the VTOL’s heavy cannon.
- Ceph Hunter: An extremely dangerous combat exoskeleton equipped with a freeze ray and charged ice blasts. It appears only twice in the game and is always accompanied by Ceph soldiers.
Tactics:
- First Encounter: Cannot be killed due to its shield. Slow it down with anti-aircraft emplacements and escape.
- Second Encounter: Use the Hurricane minigun with a laser sight in Strength Mode. Aim precise bursts at its mandible when it lowers its shield. About two magazines are needed.
